Optimum and RDA Supplement Levels

Note 1: The optimum levels are calculated by Dr Paul Clayton – the former President of the forum on Food and Health at the Royal Society of Medicine – based on over 35 years of research. His book Health Defence details all the evidence behind his concept of optimum nutrition.

Note 2: His recommended level for supplementation takes into account the average intake from food. So the recommended level is the extra needed to achieve an optimum level.

In some cases normal intake is enough and not much supplementation is needed and/or the RDA is adequate. Some nutrients also have an upper safe limit.
